The Presidency has dismissed calls by Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for President Bola Tinubu’s resignation over the country’s challenges.
Describing the demand as childish, anti-democratic, and a distraction from government efforts to address economic and security concerns, the Presidency defended the administration’s performance.
In a statement, Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga said Obi’s comparison with the resignation of the British Prime Minister ignores Nigeria’s presidential system, which operates on fixed four-year terms. He also cited recent bye-election victories in Ekiti, Nasarawa, Enugu, Ondo, and Rivers states as evidence of public support for the Tinubu administration.
On security, the Presidency said more than 15,000 terrorists have been neutralized and hundreds of kidnapped victims rescued since 2023. It added that significant investments have been made in drones and homeland security initiatives.
On the economy, the government highlighted positive GDP growth in every quarter, foreign reserves exceeding $50 billion, oil production rising to 1.8 million barrels per day, and increased federation revenue.
The statement further noted achievements in infrastructure development, the student loan programme, and electricity sector reforms through the Electricity Act and the rollout of prepaid meters.
The Presidency concluded that leadership requires confronting challenges with practical solutions rather than rhetoric, insisting that Nigeria remains on the path to progress.
