EL RUFAI

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has provided an update on the ongoing trial of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, in separate proceedings before the Federal High Court and Kaduna State High Court.

The commission says the charges stem from investigations into alleged abuse of office, fraud, and money laundering during his tenure between 2015 and 2023. According to the ICPC, the defendant is facing a 10-count charge at the Federal High Court, including allegations of unlawful receipt of over ₦289 million as severance allowance and $797,900 suspected to be proceeds of illegal activities. He is also accused of conspiring with a co-defendant, Joel Adoga, to conceal the origin of funds. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty.

At the Kaduna State High Court, where the former governor is facing an amended 9-count charge, the presiding judge adjourned ruling on his bail application to April 21, 2026, citing the need to conclude the decision. The court ordered that he remain in ICPC custody pending the ruling.

Meanwhile, the Federal High Court in Kaduna granted El-Rufai bail in the sum of ₦200 million with strict conditions, including two sureties, surrender of his international passport, and monthly reporting to the commission. The court also directed that he remain in custody until the bail conditions are met, while reaffirming its commitment to due process as the trial continues.
