Nigeria and the Republic of Benin have taken another step toward strengthening their longstanding diplomatic relationship as President Bola Tinubu received newly inaugurated Beninese President Romuald Wadagni during an introductory visit to Lagos.
President Wadagni arrived at President Tinubu's residence on Monday afternoon, where he was welcomed by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu before proceeding to meet with the Nigerian leader. The visit marks Wadagni's first official engagement with President Tinubu since assuming office as President of the Republic of Benin.
The two leaders held a closed-door meeting that lasted approximately 30 minutes, during which they discussed issues of mutual interest, including bilateral relations, regional cooperation, economic integration, and efforts to promote peace and stability within West Africa.
President Wadagni was elected in the April 12 presidential election and was inaugurated on May 24, 2026, succeeding former President Patrice Talon. His visit to Nigeria is seen as an important diplomatic move aimed at reinforcing the strong historical, economic, and cultural ties shared by both neighbouring countries.
Prior to the inauguration, President Tinubu delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at the swearing-in ceremony in Benin Republic, underscoring the significance Nigeria places on its relationship with the West African nation.
Nigeria and Benin maintain close cooperation in areas such as trade, border security, regional development, and the activities of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Analysts believe the meeting between Presidents Tinubu and Wadagni could pave the way for deeper collaboration on economic growth, infrastructure development, security, and regional integration.
The visit also highlights the commitment of both leaders to sustaining cordial relations and fostering partnerships that will benefit their citizens and contribute to the stability and prosperity of the West African sub-region.
